Great Knits for Kids
There are some great kids patterns available with lots of unisex options and the opportunity to get creative with your yarn choice and colour combos. I tend to prefer knitting for myself or my dad, or baby patterns - I like to see the end result being worn or knit something small so I can get it done and onto something else. I'm a very impatient knitter!
That said, I have tried some of these popular kids patterns and some of them are quick and easy - particularly the poncho at the top of the list. I also love working with Sirdar Snuggly yarn and the pattern at number two almost knits itself. I've tried it in neutral and bold colours and I like how both turn out. The slipover is particularly cute.
I was surprised at how quickly the ballet crossover cardigan and legwarmers knitted up. I knitted it as a request and I was nervous about the increasing. When I've tried an increase before it has turned out wonky and not very good. However, I tried a new increase technique where you put your needle between two stitches, then knit as normal and put the new stitch onto the left hand needle. It worked a treat.
Here is a list of the 10 most popular patterns in my store mixed with some of my favourites:
Number One
One of the most popular patterns in my store, this pattern sells all around the world. It's a great, easy knit pattern. The yarn takes a little bit of getting used to but as its a chunky yarn, it is quick to knit. The patterns feature garter stitch or a very easy lace stitch. Yummy yarn is a super soft chenille yarn and the colours featured - Raspberry Ripple and Cupcake and both a beautiful mix of pink and white or purple and white with flecks of pink Buy the pattern, Yummy yarn or the kit - garter stitch or lacy
Number Two
Another super simple, popular pattern from Sirdar. This pattern knits in sizes 0-6 years and uses DK yarn - the recommended yarn is Sirdar Snuggly. A soft yarn available in a wide range of colours. I love the textures in this pattern and the slipover is quick and easy to knit. The neutral colours featured in the pattern are perfect for this pattern, but it also looks fab in some of the brighter, bolder Snuggle shades. Buy the pattern and yarn
Number Three
This is a great, popular pattern which is perfect for special occasions. The selection of colours in the King Cole Galaxy DK range has something for every outfit. I love this yarn, it is soft and woven with sequins for a sparkle effect. Boleros look great with bridesmaid or flower girl outfits and a lot of people purchase for First Communion and Bat Mitzvah celebrations. Buy the pattern and the yarn, or purchase together as a kit in pink or white yarn
Number Four
Aran knits are one of my favourite types of patterns and this one is fun to knit, with textures and cables. Choose from a cardigan or sweater, or knit them both! They are both flexible and look great with leggings and jeans. There is quite a lot of knitting in this design, so it is best for knitters with a bit of experience. Buy the pattern and the yarn
Number Five
I really enjoyed knitting this pattern and was pleased with the result. Knitted in King Cole Comfort DK - a soft yarn available in mostly pastels and light summer colours, but there are a few darker shades if you prefer. It is a beautiful yarn to work with. Choose from short or long sleeves. The leg warmers are knitted in a wide rib. Buy
Number Six
This cute cardigan is easy to knit, you have to pay attention to the positioning of the holes, but once you've done a few rows it starts to get easier. I love this lace effect detail, it gives a lovely texture to the finished piece. The cardigan only has three buttons, which I also like. You can dress this cardigan up or down, it is very flexible and great for Spring and Autumn outfits. Buy
Number Seven
This pattern is so pretty and, like the previous boleros, it uses King Cole Galaxy DK. The sparkle effect is the perfect finishing touch. The version with the flowers round the neckline takes a bit more time but is worth the effort. A lovely dressy bolero that looks stunning with party clothes and for special occasions. Number Eight
This Aran hoodie looks so cosy and comfortable to wear. Knitted with or without a front pocket, it is perfect for outdoor adventures. There isn't a huge amount of cabling but it is a pattern for knitters with some experience. Moss (seed) stitch can also be tricky - it took me quite a long time to get my head around it, now I can't understand why it was so difficult! This is the perfect pattern to practise with. Buy the pattern and Aran yarn
Number Nine
Number Ten
I love the subtle textured panels created with moss (seed) stitch in this pattern. The round neck is my favourite but the pattern includes a v neck option. Knitted in double knit yarn, you can knit in one colour or create a stripe effect by knitting the stocking stitch and moss stitch panels in alternating or multiple colours. Buy
